28 Feb Gifted & Able in PE day
On Tuesday 28th February, the Collective were proud to take a group of Year 5 pupils from schools across Havering to take part in a ‘Gifted and Able in PE’ day at the University of East London, Sports Dock. Being part of this event provided the opportunity for the children to try some new, fun activities and for second year students at the University to work with the children as part of the coaching and PE module of their course.
Following last year’s successful pilot, the invitation to attend was extended to all Collective member schools to select one boy and one girl from year 5 who are gifted and able in PE. A total of 58 pupils attended the day which proved to be real success.
On arrival the children completed an energetic warm up before being divided in to smaller groups to take part in a round robin of activities including Dodgeball, basketball, seated volley ball and a multi skilled games circuit. The last event was a team obstacle relay where all the groups competed and the children really raised the roof displaying terrific team work by supporting each other to complete the course.
In the feedback provided by the children, Dodgeball came out on top as the most liked activity, with seated volleyball being the most challenging. Lots of comments centred around how much fun the activities were and it was really encouraging to see the majority of children raising their hand when asked who had learned a new skill during the event. Feedback on the coaches was positive with the children saying they gave them confidence, made the activities fun and gave clear instructions, tips and techniques.
Thank you to all of the staff and students at UEL Sports Dock for providing such an enjoyable and positive experience for the children. Special thanks to Mrs Gray from St Josephs and to all the staff and parent helpers for your support in making the day possible.
