18 Mar Orienteering Festival
On Tuesday 17th March we ran a Year 5 Orienteering Festival at Stubbers Adventure Centre. Six schools attended and battled the conditions to enter the event. The children took part in some warm up activities which included learning how to read their maps and learn the direction of travel they were heading in. The children were split into teams of three to five from their schools are were set two courses to direct themselves around and tap in at each station with their controls before reaching the finish.
We had some fantastic course times achieved from the children, with most teams getting a better time on the second course. The children had a great time navigating round the lake and getting themselves muddy! Congratulations to all that participated on the day. A special mention to Maple Minions from Harold Wood who stopped to help another group from another school who needed some assistance as they were going round, they won our outstanding teamwork award!
Our winners from Course B were the Beechlings with a time of 9:42 from Harold Wood with Group 2 from Scargill coming 2nd in 9.50 and Group 1 again from Scargill in 3rd (12.02).
On Course A, Group 2 from Scargill were winners with a time of 7:50, Beechlings from Harold Wood came in second with 8:00 and Resilience in third from James Oglethorpe.
We look forward to seeing some of the children returning for the competition next year when they are in Year 6.
Our thanks goes to Josh Jenner for his help with the running of the Orienteering Festival and Steve and Julie for their roles as officials.
A final thank you to Stubbers Adventure Centre for allowing us to use their venue and for all the marshals who assisted the children around the course.
