24 Nov Primary Panathlon
74 young people aged 5 to 11 years from 10 different schools took part in a Panathlon Event held at the YMCA Romford. School’s that could not field a whole team were brought together to create ‘All Star Teams’, thus ensuring everyone could take part. Panathlon is a charity and has been holding Mini Paralympic Multi Sports Events up and down the country for almost 20 years. The primary event is based around sports like Boccia, New Age Kurling, Poly Bat, Table Cricket, Basketball and Athletics, each participant gets a score for each activity, those scores are added together to create team scores. Havering has a history of running secondary aged events, however the primary event is still fairly new to the school calendar. Some of the 74 children had attended this event over the last two years, but for others it was their first time. However the enjoyment, laughter and sense of fulfilment was the same for one and all. In part down to the young leaders from Campion School and Havering College, who did an outstanding job in introducing the events to the youngsters and then helping them achieve personal best scores. All youngsters went home with medals and certificates, with one young lady coming up to ask me at the end ‘Had she really just won a medal and could she keep it?’. Individuals and Schools were also given special awards by the Havering Sports Collective for Self Belief and Respect. Panathlon events always brings smiles and laughter from everyone who takes part, whether it’s as a competitor, leader, teacher, parent or organiser, here’s to Panathlon’s next 20 years, the value of those smiles is immeasurable.
