18 Nov Virtual Cross Country
Our Virtual Cross Country event took place between Monday 19th October and Friday 6th November 2020. Due to Covid restrictions, this year was non competitive and instead focused around participation. The aim was to get as many schools and young people in the borough taking part and being physically active.
There was no set format required for the event. Suggested distances were given for each year group and schools were free to adapt them as necessary. The distance could be covered in any chosen way, from running to walking to skipping. It was not required to run the event as a race format, most schools covered it in a PE lesson.
A total of 11,571 children from years 1-11 participated and covered a tremendous distance of 15,604 miles, which is further than travelling from London to New Zealand!
Out of the overall number, 1327 children from key stage one took part, travelling 448 miles between them. A total of 3863 key stage two children travelled 3737 miles. Secondary schools recorded 6381 participants who travelled 11, 419 miles.
Each school were awarded a certificate celebrating their participant numbers and distance travelled. Full details can be found here.
Havering participant numbers of children from years 3 to 11 were submitted to London Youth Games as part of the school games competition. The borough with the highest number of participants will be awarded a trophy and the title of the first ever London School Games Cross Country Champions. Results are expected to be announced shortly.
We have received some great feedback from our participating schools, with one primary school saying “the kids absolutely loved the competition and all wanted a second go this week”!
Well done Havering!
